All You Need is Gratitude

A FRIEND of mine has two basic prayers - "help me" and "thank you".

She says: "I find them equally powerful, equally relevant and equally necessary."

Gratitude, along with humility, is an unfashionable, almost forgotten virtue.

It can offend our self-centred sense of entitlement by forcing us to admit that our lives, and everything within them, are gifts.

Strange Signs of Times

LIFE truly is stranger than fiction, as illustrated this week by news that a powerful atheist group threatened to sue the little town of Whiteville, Tennessee, for having a cross atop its water tower.

The mayor of the predominantly church-going town complied in his own way, having one arm of the Christian symbol removed as a protest.

Technically, the cross is gone but what's left serves as a reminder to what the town was forced to do. The town's residents have now placed hundreds of crosses in their front yards.

Meanwhile, another US atheist group was forced to take down anti-Christian billboards bearing a false quotation by founding father Thomas Jefferson.

Certain of No Certainty

NEWSPAPER publisher William Randolph Hearst, always in search of a sensational story, once sent a telegram to a leading astronomer.

"Is there life on Mars?" the telegram read. "Please cable 1000 words."

The astronomer promptly replied: "Nobody knows" - repeated 500 times.

Much of what happens in the cosmos remains elusive to science. Science cannot yet explain much about dark matter, how life on earth arose, or what the universe is made of. It can't explain what genetic changes made us uniquely human.
