THE great piano thumper and hit-maker Billy Joel once resolved to kill himself.

"I was 21 and I had no prospects," he recalled. "No high-school diploma, my band had broken up, the girl I was with had split up with me. It was a period of intense self-pity ... " Fortunately things did not go as planned.

"I looked in the closet and there was chlorine bleach, with that skull-and-crossbones warning. And then there was some kind of furniture polish, with a smaller skull and crossbones. So it really came down to a matter of flavour I drank the furniture polish. I'll never forget - I was sitting on a chair, waiting to die. All of a sudden, my stomach starts to process this stuff. I said, 'This is ridiculous'."

Can Science Prove There is God?

A WIDE-RANGING Oxford study has concluded belief in God is part of human nature.

 And we are naturally disposed to believe in a divine power and that some vital part of us survives death.

The theory is that human thought processes are rooted in religious concepts rather than ideas learned from experience because they provide some social benefit. The co-director of the three-year international study, Prof Roger Trigg, said the research showed religion was not just something for a peculiar few to do on Sundays.

The End of the World

IF YOU make plans after next Saturday, you are an optimist.

Because, according to a US religious group, May 21 is Judgment Day and God will begin destroying the planet, starting with a mighty earthquake in New Zealand.

According to the group, the true believers will be raptured up to Heaven and the rest will endure a five-month torment on Earth, with the universe ending on October 21. The same group predicted Jesus would return in 1994. But the doomsayers reckon they have crunched the numbers and this time it's really going to happen.
