IN the first days of spring of 1883, French artist Claude Monet began a painting of a huge oak tree which stood against a cliff near his home.

Monet's work was interrupted by three weeks of rain. On returning to the site, the perfectionist was annoyed to find his tree in full bloom.

At the respected artist's request, the mayor of the village organised a working party which removed every single leaf from the tree so that Monet could continue where he had left off.

``We've got to recognise that every other person out there is also created in the image of God. They are as much a child of God as are we.''

I jumped the rope and placed hands on the keys that had been touched by one of humanity's great geniuses. I managed the first couple of bars of the Moonlight Sonata -- about 20 notes -- before a very large German security guard grabbed me and threw me out of the house.Briefly playing that old, out-of-tune instrument was a profound and potent experience; a vague but instinctive connection with some sort of spiritual power.
