VII: Mind and Brain: Two Separate Entities

E-mail Print PDF

Human brain, under various social and cultural influences, loses its natural abilities and instincts. It dwells in the slavery of words, thoughts, memories, and logic and thrives on the illusory existence of ego or "I". This is the basic problem of human life; the least we are able to even identify this problem. We have learned so far that the pseudo image of "I" gives birth to contemplative factors such as religion, cast, sect, society, nation etc. Due to these worldly attachments, emotions like hate, jealousy and animosity erupt and cause wars, riots, terrorism and alike. The human body, in the context, loses its natural sensations and inhabits various ailments and deficiencies.

We have extensively discussed the formation of ego or “I” in the human mind in the previous chapters. This chapter reinforces the fact that the mind and brain are two separate entities. They are, indeed separate and it is not difficult to observe that. As long as “you” are able to analyze and study the brain, you are something other than the brain. Else, the brain does not need to understand itself. If you close your eyes and say a sentence, “My name is The Name (whatever)”, there is one who is talking, one who is listening, one who is watching and the body. You can easily talk to yourself. We all do; most parts of our lives. Who is talking to whom? The very fact that this duality exists is the proof that there is more than one thing in our mind. If we are all thought, and if the thoughts and thinking mind are that realities of the human life then who is running the body? What logic have we given to our hearts to beat? How do babies grow without the thoughts?

Most people would insist that the thoughts are essential to our development and advancement. They will perhaps not see any point in becoming thoughtless. Those people have to ask themselves if our progress as a human race and advancement has really been due to thinking. If we look at the history, most of the philosophies and thoughts have been contrary to what we have achieved and developed so far. They gave death sentence to Socrates because he defied the words of the books. Which philosophy said that one day we will be able to break the genetic codes of the human life? The books, philosophies and logic have always been opposite to the science. Yet, what we have achieved so far, be it a tiny mobile phone rendered through a satellite in the space or a laser gun blowing stones in the kidney, has been through scientific achievements. On the other hand, all the philosophies and logic have produced is arguments, war of words, differences of opinions and chaos in thinking minds. We still have not found answer to the meaning of life. We have not found any answers at all! We are still greedy, angry, tricky and whatever we were hundreds of years ago. The situation and environment has changed, the characteristics of human life have not. In fact, the situation has become worse. We have pedophiles who do not hesitate to rape a year old baby. We have kids who color their hair and take drugs. What have we achieved so far in our own right as human beings? If the religions, books and philosophers had the answers, why did not they work? What thinking or idea are we proud of? Lawyers finding loopholes in the laws and freeing the criminals? Or the business of this world holding people to ransom by a few written words on a piece of paper?

Thoughtlessness is not passivity. It does not mean sitting in one place doing nothing. It means eliminating the illusory thoughts and living a Natural life. If the brain, under constant influence of thinking mind, has brought us this much development and advancement, what would be its capability in totality – free from the thoughts? It is impossible to think about that. The first step towards total knowledge and advancement is in identifying the dual nature of mind.

The Complex Inner World

One hundred and eighty million muscles and veins in the body are under continuous influence of the thought waves. Since the thoughts are usually conflicting in nature (uncertainty, yes, no etc.), the body cells undergo the same duress. Naturally, each cell of the body should work in consonance with each other for a healthy existence. However, due to imposed conflicts, they tend to work against each other and send conflicting signals to the brain. That is how so many thoughts erupt at one time in the mind. As a result, brain cells and nerves always remain tense and the brain is unable to deal with the whole body at one time. The body, thus, becomes less sensitive and starts weakening. Over a period of time, the body completely wears away to what we call death.

In comparison, other creatures in the Nature live in much more harmony since they do not have to endure the thought process such as ours. They have healthy bodies and do not require doctors. Their mind and body cells are in complete equilibrium and they are very much part of the ever flowing Nature.

One drop of dew makes the grass to bend. The brain cells which are hundred times lighter than the grass are continuously weighted under millions of thoughts. Besides, the brain has to bear the burden of something which is not there. We are talking about the illusory existence of mind and "I" which induces an additional weight on the brain cells. With "I" come the supplementary afflictions such as social, cultural, emotional and financial factors. Moreover, it is subjected to perform superfluous tasks of emotions and feelings such as hate, love, animosity, friendship and many more. It is forced to bear the pseudo image of "I" and project the false thoughts appear as reality by the mind. The added burden of religion, family, duty, ambition and zillions of other thoughts, ideas and emotions just make it more complicated and burdensome. Does it sound like a pity thinking mind has conquered the all powerful and omnipresent brain? Well, not really. In spite of all these adversities, we have evolved as human beings and advanced in our existence. We are still in the process of evolution. Evolution seems to have occurred on the trial and error basis. Nature has identified the problem of the thinking mind and is trying to eliminate it at the root – in the genes of newly born babies. It will also create means to completely stop it from happening again. Why do you think you are reading this book? And why have we written it?

The fact of the matter is that beside all these needless activities, the brain has to take care of natural body functions like breathing, blood circulation, digestion, defecation and immune system. All these activities are incessant and the brain is therefore performing dual tasks. This burden has affected its longevity and as a consequence, the human life has become shorter. Even today, people living away from modern civilization have longer life span than people living in the large cities. Life is Nature’s gift to us and the humans have no right to corrupt and reduce it by senseless means. The mind makes us think that thinking and logic are necessary for survival. Ignorant of the truth and giving in to the mechanical process of mind, humans have been unknowingly and constantly leading a suicidal life. The mind has created Gods, demigods, scriptures and other worldly means in an attempt to make the life peaceful and happy. Yet, nobody seems to be happy regardless of one’s social or professional status. The other creatures in Nature, however, do not think and therefore do not need such flimsy aids to live a happy and natural life.

Modern science has progressed tremendously in the last few decades. It has, sort of, transformed the life of every person on the earth. It has invented numerous objects of comfort and convenience. In fact, artificial intelligence is invented in the forms of computers and digital machines. Science has, however, not bothered to see for whom these facilities are created. Everybody, collectively, assuming that "I" is real and the external means to satisfy and comfort the body can make mankind happy. They are, however, not inclined to investigate if there is really somebody in the body to enjoy the materials. In fact, they are not ready to look beyond the physical body because the scientists are no different than other people. The brain works for its own survival and evolution. The sudden natural flashes of natural knowledge have helped create the science. If the brain is freed from the thinking mind, it will work naturally in a multitude of natural knowledge.

Beware of the Illusion

We do not have the insight to observe that "I" is merely a hallucination. It does not exist in truth. Since our thoughts are influenced by past lives, the strong feeling of "I" is inherited by all the human beings. We are born with desires, memories and delusions of numerous past lives. We have been genetically conditioned to believe that "I" is real. Since our thoughts are always influenced by this fallacy, it is not possible to achieve liberation by "thinking". To be free, we have to first acknowledge that we are caught. If we continue to live the way we are, how will this illusion end? "I" is imaginary and how can one satisfy something that does not exist? We have only known the unnatural side of life and have not actually realized the existence of the natural and real one. That is how we do not see the web of thoughts. To be able to see it, we need a thoughtless mind and awareness.

We shall also have to analyze the way science and scientists work. It seems that all their activities are based on the "thinking process" which is not entirely true. They have created things and objects that merely aid and satisfy the ego. There is a commercial aspect of science that has encouraged money-making and profiteering. However, there are some finer achievements such as the experiments on the force of Gravity, space science, genetic science and nuclear science that do not seem to be produces of thoughts. Until now, we have not correctly and fully utilized these achievements but they are instrumental in the evolution process.

The Modern Perspective

A mind caught in the imaginary world of "I" will keep on making instruments that will only support the illusion. If the scientists can be made aware of this deceit and if they work in harmony with Nature, the whole mankind can be benefited. In our own thinking minds, perceptions and ideas, we all live in a dream and accept it as a reality. The scientists are no exception. They are as human as we all are. Whatever intellect and genius they have, they are also caught in the web of thoughts and ego. Anything coming out of such a mind will only be a manifestation of "I" or the illusion. The world will seem to be progressing and advancing but the basic problem of "I" will always remain same. If we do not know who is there in the body to enjoy all the perceived success, nothing can be achieved.

Science, today, has an authority over ancient scriptures. It has proven them wrong in many ways. Science has come a long way from the first telescope to nuclear physics and genetic researches of today. Einstein gave the theory of relativity, which revolutionized quantum physics. The contribution of Newton is equally commendable. Together with the laws of motion, gravity and relativity, modern science is reaching out to explore the Universe. On the other side, quantum physics, has helped dissecting matter and understanding the power of energy in the nucleus. In spite of these discoveries, scientists have not been able to completely break up the atom. They have been able to discover that something is there but they do not know why. They know that the Amino Acids are building blocks of human life but cannot fully understand the DNA and its molecular patterns. Of late, genetic research has advanced but where they are leading suggests that they are trying to establish “what is there" but not "why it is there".

This forces us to believe that still the knowledge is incomplete. We have some physicists like Adington, who said, "Some unknown power is controlling the world and we do not know how it works", recognizing the power of unknown (only to a thinking mind). It is very clear that we cannot find the truth through words. It can only be a natural basic brain, devoid of thoughts, that can be in oneness with Nature.

Differences between the Brain and the Mind

Professor Antonio Domasio of Iowa University has been conducting extensive research on this subject. He has in his essay titled ‘How the Brain creates the Mind’ categorically stated that the mind and brain are two separate entities. He further says that the exact difference between the two will probably be tapped some time by the year 2050.

Dr. Sandra Witelson of McMaster University, Canada has conducted extensive research on Dr. Albert Einstein’s Brain. Explaining about Dr. Einstein’s intelligence she has stressed that he was a “late learner” of speech. This gave enough time to his brain to develop to its optimum capacity. She found that a particular area of his Brain called the ‘Parietal lobe’ was bigger than that of an average person. Conclusively, she stressed that people who have a bigger Parietal lobe tend to become Mathematicians, Scientists, Engineers and alike.

Off late, Dr Anthony Metaxus of the Research Projects Institute, Washington DC has stimulated the brain of a chimpanzee named ‘Frank’. The experiment has been successful to the extent that ‘Frank’ has been able to earn $ 25,000/- on the Stock Market. His IQ is 150. He can type 120 words/minute. This goes to prove that the brain crushing education system of today is not at all necessary to acquire basic intelligence and succeed in the world. If the human brain can be stimulated like Frank, entire mankind can live in at a higher intellectual level. Dr. Kevin Warwick, professor of cybernetics at the University of Reading, U.K. has been making extensive research in this direction. He has implanted a chip in his inner left arm that records signals coming to and from the brain. He summarizes that we have the potential to alter our intellectual levels, but only electronically.

Professor Stephen Grossberg of Boston University, Ray Kurzweil, et al. Their research aims at understanding how a brain gives rise to a mind and  know the mind - body problem.

Some of the fundamental activities of the brain, and the differences from the mind, observed by the author are as follows:

  • The brain has been developing for millions of years’ right from the single celled amoeba to billions of tissues of the human brain of today, whereas the mind is just 10,000 years old.
  • The human brain develops two months after the conception.
  • The creation of body parts in the fetus is done by the brain.
  • The complex process of birth and the generation of milk in the mother’s breast are done by the Brain.
  • The complicated process of breathing in the outside environment is also carried out with relative ease by the brain.
  • The brain also makes the parents look after the newborn infant for its own survival.
  • Till the age of 12-20 months, the brain of the infant remains absolutely thoughtless and sensitive, later the mind is created.
  • The brain is functional during sleep, unconsciousness, meditation, trance and also the coma.
  • Mind can bring back memories of the previous births in the state of hypnosis but cannot recall the memories of its infancy because no thoughts are created in that period.
  • The mind survives on the basis of the brain just as a creeper on a tree.
  • Till date we feel that the mind is making use of the brain as its tool, but in fact it is the brain that has been observing from the mind and preparing for advancement of human life. In another 100-250 years the brain will eliminate the evils of the mind and instead use the mind to develop its intelligence even further.  It may use silicon or bio-chips to transform itself to a new age of evolution.
  • The brain will change its structure and travel to distant planets to gather more information about itself and the Universe. According to the laws of Negative Entropy, such discovery will make mankind truly happy for thousands of years. In the event of moving away from Earth, it will travel to distant planets for its survival.
  • The mind creates all types of Sadhnas (meditation techniques), religions, demigods and tries to save its identity (ego), while the brain just observes all the futile exercises of the mind. The mind does not know anything about sleep and tries to meditate but the brain is aware in sleep, meditation, trance, birth and death and in every state, even after death.
  • The nature of the mind is to always create problems, while the nature of the brain is to always remain in awareness.
  • The mind is not aware of its own function but still pursues in its search of the soul and god. Whereas the brain is fully aware of the mind and regulates the flow of energy (chetna) in the body to a certain extent.
  • Prof. Ray Kurzweil has postulated that by the year 2030, we would be able to download the mind into the computer and free the brain from its influence.

From the above it becomes clear that the mind and brain are two separate entities. But the state of the brain is higher than the mind. It can therefore be summarized that it is the brain that can provide true happiness to mankind. Today modern science asserts that stimulation of the brain would eradicate all the diseases and prolong life to the extent of 1000-1500 years.

The brain has the capacity to synchronize with Nature and control life through natural instincts. If humans can understand this truth and come out of the slavery of thoughts and "I", they can lead a very intrinsic, peaceful and happy life. Today entire mankind gives importance to the mind but understanding the difference between the brain and mind would help us grasp the subject in a comprehensive manner.
